Client-Side Programming

Client-Side Programming (also known as Front-End Development) involves coding for everything that the user sees while viewing a page in a web browser. This can include elements of web design, user interface (UI) and experience (UX), form validation, search engine optimization (SEO), analytics, social media integration, and a myriad of other interactive technologies that are constantly evolving.

Where It Fits

Entry-level Client-Side Programmer or Front-End Developer positions tend to require a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, along with 0-2 years experience. However, in many cases you will find that a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, or even no degree at all, is acceptable if you possess “equivalent experience” in the skills needed for the job. These skills often include technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, AJAX, JSON, JQuery, or ASP.NET. Once you learn these technologies, you can continue to build your experience through internships, open-source projects, or even pro-bono website work. You can also continue to build your portfolio through OST even beyond your coursework. All of these experiences, along with your Certificate of Professional Development from OST, contribute to a robust resume of client-side programming (or front end development) that will be sure to impress employers.
