New Python Course Authored by Steve Holden Available from the O'Reilly School of Technology
Python 1: Beginning PythonSebastopol, CA—If you are looking for a programming language that’s known for its readability, boasts a tight-knit community, and is used in cutting-edge companies like Google and O’Reilly, Python is for you. If you want to learn Python as fast and effectively as possible, but don’t know where to begin, then the O’Reilly School of Technology (OST) is for you.
As part of the upcoming four-course Python Programming Certificate Series, OST has announced a new course designed to help current or aspiring Python coders learn new skills, build experience, and earn a University Certificate, all online. Python 1: Beginning Python is a self-paced, instructor-coached course written by Steve Holden, author of Python Web Programming and chairman of the Python Software Foundation.
“Python programmers regard programs as an important means of communication between programmers as well as with the computer,” says Holden. “Plus the community is a great mix: everything from brains the size of a planet to regular human beings, with many flavors of geek in between.”
Python 1 Covers the Basics with a Unique Approach
OST courses use a unique, constructivist learning technique in which the student is actively engaged in creating real projects while material is being presented, all the while being coached one-on-one by an instructor. With guidance from Steve Holden’s courseware, students in Python 1: Beginning Python build Python programs at their own pace within Ellipse™, OST’s Eclipse-based integrated learning environment. In this basic course, students learn about expressions, variables, conditionals, loops, lists, sets, dicts, functions, objects and exceptions, handing projects in to their instructors for feedback, practicing and improving until the skill is mastered. Says Holden, “[OST’s] approach encourages students to take their own time to develop the practical skills they need to solve their unique problems.”
Upon completion of Python 1: Beginning Python, students will earn 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. More importantly, they will have built an online portfolio of professional Python projects that can be shown to potential employers.
In addition to the Python course and upcoming Certificate series, the O'Reilly School of Technology currently offers Certificate courses in Database Administration, Perl Programming, Client-Side Web Programming, Linux/Unix System Administration, Java Programming, Web Programming, Open Source Programming, .NET Programming, and PHP/SQL Programming.
