Unix for Web Programming

Learn Unix for Beginners, Basic Web Server Administration

In this course, students will learn basic directory and file administration, as well as web server configuration, maintenance, and baseline shell-scripting. Students will also learn web and Internet troubleshooting techniques that will help them with Unix-based web programming projects.

Upon completion of the course, students will earn 4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) and a CEU letter from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. This course counts toward the Web Programming Certificate series.

From beginning to end, participants will learn by doing their own Unix/Linux projects. These projects, as well as the final project, will add to the student's portfolio and will contribute to certificate completion. Besides a browser and internet connection, all software is provided online by the O'Reilly School of Technology.

Course Details and Syllabus Course: Unix for Web Programming Tuition: $298 Time Frame: Due to our monthly lab fee system, this course is completely self-paced. You can expect to work approximately 40 hours on this course. Technical Requirements: As long as you have a web browser and internet connection, you can take this course from anywhere in the world. CEUs: 4 Continuing Education Units with official letter from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. Software: The web-based Learning Sandbox® provided for you will contain all your lessons, projects, quizzes, account files, editors, and tools necessary to build your skills from beginning to end, even beyond coursework. In addition, you will be provided with a Linux server account which can be accessed through the Sandbox or, if you prefer, any normal SSH program. No other software is needed. Instructor: You will have one instructor throughout the course who will evaluate your projects and quizzes, hand them back for improvement when necessary, and coach you throughout your skills advancement. However, within a few weeks of enrolling, you'll receive the free ebook Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition as a complimentary reference from O'Reilly.
