DBA 1: Introduction to Database Administration

SQL Programming for the Beginning or Intermediate DBA

Many database administrators and programmers are faced with tables and structures designed by others, perhaps created many years ago. In order to conceptualize database objects and structures, programmers need to understand the capabilities of modern database systems and how to retrieve database metadata.

In this course, students will learn the basics to create a well-designed database using basic database commands. They will also learn how to manipulate the data stored in these tables and to return meaningful results to help analyze the data stored. From beginning to end, participants will learn by doing SQL-based projects in their own MySQL shell, and then handing them in for instructor feedback. These projects, as well as the final project (developing tables for a blog), will add to the student's portfolio and will contribute to certificate completion. Besides a browser and internet connection, all software is provided online by the O'Reilly School of Technology.

Upon completion of the course, students will earn 4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) and a CEU letter from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. This is the first course in the Database Administration Certificate series. This is a four-course series.
