Linux/Unix 3: Unix Services

The third course in the Linux/Unix System Administration certificate series covers the fundamentals necessary to run an email server and a web server. The first part of the course is devoted to email, how it works, the role of sendmail, aliases, and procmail filters. In the second part of the course, students install and configure their own Apache web server. They learn about the importance of access control and web server logs, as well as how to reconfigure Apache so that it works in conjunction with PHP and postgreSQL.

Upon completion of the course, students will earn 4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) and a CEU letter from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. This course counts toward the System Administration Certificate Series.

From beginning to end, participants will learn by configuring real email and web servers. These projects, as well as the final project, will add to the student's portfolio and will contribute to certificate completion. Students will have root and console access to real machines, thus they will gain real experience. Besides a browser and internet connection, all software is provided online by the O'Reilly School of Technology.

This course covers topics including: email, sendmail, procmail, aliases, web servers, Apache, logs, installing PHP and postgreSQL.
