Linux/Unix 2: Networking and DNS

This course is the second part in the System Administration series. Students will continue using real systems while learning how to interface a Unix system with a network. They will start by learning about IP addresses and how to configure ethernet devices. Students will learn about many of the services offered by a Unix server and finish up by configuring their very own DNS service from scratch. After this course, students will be well on their way to having the skills of an entry level system administrator.

Upon completion of the course, students will earn 4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) and a CEU letter from the University of Illinois Office of Continuing Education. This course counts toward the System Administration Certificate Series.

From beginning to end, participants will learn by configuring a real Linux network. These projects, as well as the final project, will add to the student's portfolio and will contribute to certificate completion. Students will have root and console access to real machines, thus they will gain real networking experience. Besides a browser and internet connection, all software is provided online by the O'Reilly School of Technology.
